Healthy patience

I started on this journey toward healthier eating after the birth of our fifth child. Unfortunately a little late in the game, but we have made significant changes in the time since then. One of the first changes was to our Sunday morning traditional breakfast. I always popped open a can of cinnamon rolls for a special, and very easy, breakfast. Well, one look at the ingredient list through my new 'glasses' and I realized that needed to go. So, baby steps, I decided to make my own cinnamon rolls. Whole wheat, ground flax seed, hormone free butter, organic sweetener, etc. Well, I think they are delicious, but my kids were less convinced.

We have finally had a breakthrough! My daughter who dislikes these changes the most just said, "I'm starting to like the homemade ones better than the other ones." After every Sunday for nearly three years now, her taste buds finally decided to adjust.

I had counted on the "try it 10 times and you'll get used to it" guideline. So, if you may be facing discouragement after those ten tries at introducing healthier options to your family's diet, don't despair, just give it another 130 rounds and you may see some flicker of light at the end of the tunnel.

We too have had big changes in our diet over the last couple of years.(I used to pop my cinnamon rolls out of a can too) The kids do have a harder time with some of the changes, but I try to do them a little at a time. It is great when they say that they like something that you know is good for them, even if it takes a long time. We have Philipians 2:14 hanging in our dining room Do all things without complaining and disputing, to remind the childen not to complain about what I put on their plates.

Lisa, I have often quoted that verse around my house as well, such a great verse for so many situations! I love the idea of hanging it in the dining room. We may just have a new addition to our room decor soon . . .

Thanks
